This piece was made for a fundraiser auction for the CARTI Foundation. CARTI (Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute) is a non-profit that provides cancer treatment for a large part of Arkansas; I've worked there since 1988.
This piece was for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. It's based on a photo which, according to family legend, is the only existing picture of the two of them together before they were married.
The wood for this piece was from the skid of a shipping crate; the crate held a piece of medical equipment that came from Germany. At some point the skid must have gotten quite wet, because the spalting ran through the entire piece. The spalting looks nice, but it makes the wood a little more challenging to carve; in a couple of places the wood was a little "punky" and I had to soak it with Superglue to harden it.
The wood for this piece came from a cedar tree that stood outside my bedroom window when I was a child. The tree was cut down some time ago, and the trunk had been laying in the woods at the back of my parents' property for years.
After remodeling the living room, I needed something to fill some big empty wall spaces and tie in with the new room colors. There's actually one more small one in the set, but I couldn't find a picture of it.
